Health Care System

Reforming health care is a hot topic. There are panels on top of panels discussing the subject. Face the Nation, State of the Union, Meet the Press and more. All discussing Health Care reform from various sides. Each one attacking and disputing the other sides version of reform.

Before the discussion starts they all need to start off with a set of simple questions.
  • Is the current health care system working?
  • Do you think that children should have health care coverage regardless what they parents do since they have no choice in the matter?
  • Should all the people that have been laid off due to the economy be on there own and if the get sick, they get sick?
  • If it is broken, what is broken?

I believe that most of the people do believe that the Health Care system is broken. As a country we have the most people uninsured with the highest percentage of GNP spent on health care. We have more people than ever that if they switched jobs would either not be insurable or they would not be eligible for the medical care they need.

I hear a lot of arguments being made about "do you want government in charge of your health care and determining what medical care you get." I wonder if they think about that right now we have "for profit" companies that are trying to maximize profits determine what care we get. You go into a primary care physician and then they will refer you. After the initial referral some person that you do not see determines if you get to see the specialist. Someone who's motive is profit determines your health care.

Bottom line is that I believe health care in the US needs to be reformed. I also believe that everyone that has a piece of the pie in the current system will be fighting hard to discredit any plan that will have their piece of the pie smaller. That means we will be getting a lot of misinformation. Do your homework and try to get past the emotional twists that are sure to come your way.

If we can agree that the health care system needs to be reformed that only question that remains in how, not if.
